Standard fuel pressure regulator for boosted engine?

Post by SuperV8 »

Is the standard fuel pressure regulator suitable for positive pressure in the inlet manifold?

Aiming for 10-12psi.

I do have a rising rate fuel reg (fse) but i'd rather use the standard because of space.

Cheers,
Tom.

You typically want a 1:1 fuel regulator. In otherwords, 1 psi of manifold pressure delivers 1 psi extra fuel etc. No idea if the OEM does - but you could test it if you have a fuel pressure guage.

The rising rate regulators are typically used on std ECU's as a "crutch" (bodge IMO) - so as you go into boost, it cranks the fuel pressure right up to provide fuel enrichment - due to the fact that the ECU cant.

Been doing some research on fuel pressure regulators.

VAG use the same pressure reg for all types of engine. 1.4 - 1.8T. Is it's good enough for them.... The only differance between pressure regulators I could find is fitment and base pressure.

All the positive pressure will do is hold the regulator shut longer, so the fuel pressure the other side will rise and equalise it. It, won't see any more pressure difference (i don't think) as the fuel will always try to equalise the boost (or vacum) pressure the other side of the diaphragm. The only differance being the spring.

Think I make sense if only in my own head!

I'll adjust it (using a vice) to give 3 bar base pressure.
