My 4.6 has my P6 windage tray and sump fitted to the block. The shallow section of the sump, designed to clear the front crossmember within the P6 base unit has to be relieved in order to allow sufficient clearance for the 4.6 crank.

The engine experiences no smoking on over run, nor do any of the 8 plugs exhibit oil fouling from burning oil as a result of excessive oil being sprayed up under the pistons.

Cheers Ron,
i dont think mines a sump issue,
its either stem seals,
or rings,
if changing the stem seals dont cure it im going to drop the engine out and double check the rings on them two problem cylinders then go from there,

Tony, I note the comments from Ron in Aus.
Before I concede that the sump theory is a load of poo, please clarify the following:
Does the smoke occur at all when the engine is spun up from idle with the vehicle static or is does it occur only when the vehicle is slowing under engine braking?

What modifications did you make to the SD1 sump to clear the crank? As I indicated earlier, a matter of 3mm extra clearance made all the difference and solved my overrun smoking problem.

What angle is the engine at? From photos it seems to be tilted down at the back more than standard.

Best of luck with the strip down. If it is the rings, I can't believe that incorrect bedding in has caused the problem on only two cylinders and therefore incorrect assembly may well be the reason. Therefore shoot the guy who fitted the 4.0 HC pistons.

Hi scotb,
It was probably your post on page 5 that reminded me of the problem I had with a modified sump on a 4.6.
As the thread has gone a little bit quiet, I suspect the strip down route has been descided as a way to a solution.
However, for future reference, it would be good to know the engine angle just to close out your question.

Hopefully, the cause of the smoking will be found in due course and the results posted on here.

sorry guys due to the snow, and living in the middle of nowhere,
not been able to get the capri out of the garage and to caprisports workshop,
the engine is near level in the engine bay now, (will try and get a photo)
tilted back a lot more when the 3.9 was in,

like i said in earlier post for ease of work will change the stem seals first on the two suspect cylinders,
as to remove the sump the engine will need to come out anyway,
but can do the seals in situe

Is it an auto? i had a SD1 with the GM 180 fitted doing just this and it turned out the modulator on the auto box had failed causing transmision fluid to be burnt. i was just about to strip the engine down when i noticed i had no fluid in the auto box. £35 and it was all sorted.

nope not auto R380 manual box fitted,

just a little update,
have made the tool for compressing the spring while in situe,
hope to do the stem seals on cylinders 4 and 8 next weekend,
if this fails and still smokes then engines coming out,
may put the 3.9 back in for the time being.

Just a thought, I cant remember what Capri servo's are like but you aren't using a bit of brake fluid are you? I have heard before that some servo's/mastercylinders when the seals go a bit can suck brake fluid in causing exactly what you have.

no mate its not fluid,
as kept an eye on that as its silicone fluid and fookin expensive,

removed the suspect stem seals today.
5 had gone hard in less then a 1000 miles other 3 were as normal :?

BUT this didnt cure the smoke,
so the engine is coming out for a strip down in the next few weeks,

anyone got any recomendations or have good discount at any of the v8 suppliers?

will need ring set,
head gaskets (composite)
sump gasket,
composite inlet,

Hello Tony,

Regarding the condition of the valve guide oil seals,..when I had my 4.6 built up in 2007, I asked about these and was told that they would not be fitting them. For my heads the guides would be K-Lined, but no valve stem oil seals would be fitted.

When I asked why,..the service manager who was going to build the engine said that they had a bad habit of coming off in use, and that the majority of the post 1994 heads which they received direct from Rover did not have them fitted. The factory had stopped fitting them.

Sorry to hear that you have to pull the engine out....
