Tappet clearance

Post by adamnreeves »

RV8 4.6. I bought some Rhoads Lifters a while ago, inface I have them installed in my engine I am building up. I have set the lash to 60 thous. This was the suggestion from the place where I purchased them. I have since been obseerving other settings and it seems that 20-40 thous is the norm. Just wondering why 60thous and is this correct.

I suspect could be a bit noisey on running?

Real Steel recomends: .060" preload for the Rover V8 is most suitable.
Just fitted mine and here's how it sounds...

it isn't a clearance as such in the normal tappet meaning and it isn't that which makes them noisy its the fact that they bleed down at low rpm. Different lifter manufacturers recommend different settings which is why you will see varying figures. The Rhoads figure is .060" so your on the money.

http://www.rhoadslifters.com/Pages/Installation.html is the install page.

Yep
I set mine to 60 thou and they sound ok at idle. In fact, they seem more rattly from inside the car than they do from outside.
They do work well though, according to my dyno map. You can see the torque flatten out at 3500 rpm. Then at 3700 rpm the torque curve jumps up again as they pump up to give full lift from th cam.
