Winter Hibernation. What mods are YOU doing ??

Post by mgbv8 »

It's cold, dark and raining outside. The MG is still on the trailer because the 2 car garage is chock full of crap. But I'm still tinkering.

For 2010 I want to hit a new PB as most uf us do. So what are you doing in the garage from now until Feb 2010 ???

I've fitted my Spider plate and my new carb.
I think my gearbox is stuck in 1st gear. So I've bought another TH350 with uprated gears and a transbrake kit. But I wont fit it until I've properly tested my old gearbox.

If I have to fit the new gearbox I'm going to either not use the transbrake for a good while, or be very gentle with it to start off with as I know it will trash my rear end quite quickly !!

I've run 10.66 with the crossfire plate with a 240 shot. The Spider plate and my new lines will give me a full 300 shot. So I'm hoping for sub 10.5 early in 2010.

What problems have you lot encountered at the end of 2009 that need to be sorted for 2010's Drag Racing season??

A front to rear check re-grease all hub bearings straighten out most of the panels as best I can. Remove strip and clean front and rear winches also fit centre winch plus a bucket load of bits and bobs to do before the 1st event in Feb 2010. No pressure then...

Im moving up to leicestershire and for the first time in 8 years I will actually live within 5 miles of my Datsun. The move will take a while and i'll not be bringing the car up until i've got all my gear and tools unpacked and set up but hopefully the long awaited union of my Datsun and a large and costly pile of parts will start to take place.

New Seats - to allow 6 point belts and get me nearer the floor to allow wearing of helmet without crick in my neck
New silencer to get below 95db so I can get some track time - currently 108db
Remove brake boosters - vac currently disconnected and the brakes get a much better feel
Total suspension realignment and check over
New Rad
Some heatproofing

I believe Kit car or one such mag is wanting to do a side by side test of every ossible make of GT40 replica in February at @Brands and mine has been earmarked for Dax So it will be strange seeing a professional driver take my car out! I hope he's tall or he won't be able to pedal it!

All in time for Le Mans Classic where I've managed to get a 1/2 hour session on the full track at something approximating race speeds (Pace car wi Mclaren Merc, or Audi R8 with Frances Formula 3 champ as driver - probably will not be able to keep up!

Expected bill - FAR TOO MUCH! but the Le Mans bit will never come up again so it's now or never!

Seriously though, as its my daily driver its the same summer or winter. I fix whatever needs fixing, change the oil, check the water etc etc...

Actually thats not true. When the weather is better i do tend to try and improve things. EFi this summer! Can you say Megasquirt? :D

Rebuild gearbox, fit uprated flexplate bolts, stud mains. Modify fuel system to kill some low end power so as to not rip up the track. Maybe assemble some Group A rocker gear ( assuming I can find the bits in the garage. ) Weld up the ported heads and fit them. Pocket port another set of heads as spares. Fit new rev limiter / shift light. Then turn up the blower!!!! Should keep me busy.
