head gasket replacement

Post by scimitar0 »

Hi,

help !

I am fitting a 1984 rover V8 from an SD1 vitesse in to my scimitar SE5a
I need to replace a head gasket as water leaks out the side of the head.
Can anyone tell me what the torque settings are for the head and what order the bolts should be torqued down in ?
I am trying to find a cheap manual for the engine no luck yet on really want to get on with the job.

Ps any extra advice on doing this job would be greatly recieved, have had a look on line for a guide but could not find anything.

:?
cheers

Phil

Get either the Range Rover or Rover SD1 Haynes manual.

Probably loads on e-Bay.

Chris.

Yes, definitely get a manual - other than that, take your time, get the right tools, have somewhere to work and someone to help out now and then. Makes all the difference! :)

And if you're not happy with something - go back and check it! If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right  8-)

the torque settings are
outer row are 60nm i dont even bother using these as they can cause early gasket failure.

centre row 90nm

inner row 90nm

7. 3. 1. 5. 9. inner
10. 6. 2. 4. 8. centre
12. 11. 13. 14. outer

imagine the full stops are the head bolts

Thanks for the info, have brought a haynes manual from the bay.

I have a really good mechanic mate who is going to help me out, however he is a rotary expert so a head gasket may be a little confusing for him

If you PM me your email address, I'll send you the rebuild manual pdf. The Haynes is great, but this one is better.

If it were me I would change both cylinder head gaskets. I would also check the lifter preload afterwards also.
