runs...bad :(

Post by Garth84x »

Hi all..

tried to start the v8 up for the 1st time today, was a struggle...

eventually fired up but ran reallt bad (shaking) and puffs out of the carbs now and then.

seems like it is misfiring but i have checked all the leads and timing etc and all is well.

any ideas please?

Garry

Anything changed since it last ran properly?

Have you accidently mixed up the plug leads?

Firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2

This is the 1st time i have ran the engine.

but was running in a toyota hilux, all i have done is changed the front cover, pump etc.

just had a look at the carbs and the pistons are a bit stiff, perhaps this is the cause?

Make sure that the rotor arm is pointing centrally at the contact in the dizzy that is firing and not off to either side of it.

Also do a firng check by spraying water at the exhaust headers of each cylinder to make sure they are all at the right/same temperature

If you've had the front cover (timing cover) off then the distributor will have had to be removed so I'd look at that first to make sure it has been timed up correctly when it's been put back in.

I had a similar problem and it was down to the integrity of the wire which fed the coil - positive side of low tension circuit.

I took it to several garages including a local rolling road facility who were useless, and RPI who sold me a new dizzy. That did help a lot, but it still ran like a dog (no pun intended)

I eventually discovered that the feed wire to the coil had been cut off and a new wire had been scotchclipped onto it to run the power amp, then another wire scotchclipped onto that one to run the coil.

Two scotchclips corroding away nicely, led to an intermittent feed at the coil. Changed it and it runs like a dream now.

Bit of a long shot, but worth checking your low tension wiring.

Thanks for the replys everyone, i have checked the leads timing and all is well, however i have found a new problem..

.when cranking the engine i noticed that there was a drip from the oil filter, i looked futher and the oil filter is full of water? how could this be?

there is no water in the sump and there is no oil pressure?

stuck now.

Head gasket me thinks, oil floats on water oil pump picks up fron the bottom of the oil pan hence oil in oil pump! I suspect your misfire could be watered plugs.

It could be the timing cover gasket putting coolant in the sump, especially since from previous postings it would seem that the cover has been removed along with the distributor.
