mt75 or type 9

Post by fistful »

Which one would better work with 3.5 rover v8? I know that some type 9 was heavy duty with 3,36:1 first gear ratio, mt75 first gear ratio can be 3,61 and they are very easy to find in opposite to HD type9. What should I choose?

Why not just use the LT77 or R380 that will easily bolt to the RV8 ?

Some might say the MT75 is better, but its got an integral bellhousing. How would you intend to bolt this to the RV8 ?

At least the T9 has a seperate bellhousing, which gives more fitment options.

Both boxes fitted to the V6 engines are apparently stronger than those fitted to the 4 cyl models

thanks but i already know that

in my case its better to modify RV8 4x4BH and mate it to some strong but popular in scrapyard gearbox, and the question is not how to make it work, but is it strong enough and which gearset is better?

I want to have 2wd and i can buy cheaply strong type9 sierra4x4 gearbox, Can I modify it in easy way?

In my opinion both the MT75 and the Type 9 are crap.

Whats wrong with the Rover box ?

If you want a strong gearbox....look for the Toyota boxes as discussed elsewhere on this forum.

Then you wont need spares.

supra, hilux, rover boxes have prices like they were made from gold. thats why i am considering sierra scorpio boxes, i found in other discussions that mt75 can take 250+ hp and now i'm double confused why is it crap.

The LT77 that normally bolts to the Rover box can also handle 250+

Or cant you source any of those locally ?

Obviously the T9 would be an easier fit, due to having a seperate bellhousing.

The MT75 would be harder to swap....especially if parts failed. At least with the T9...if it broke, its just a matter of bolting in another one.

With the MT75 that wouldnt be an option due to the integral bellhousing.

That decision is entirely up to you, and what you intend to use the vehicle for. As well as your diff ratio and overall wheel sizes.

Nobody else can decide what ratios are best.

A handy gear ratio calculator

That is the same reason i have used a w50 toyota box. They are a steel casing gearbox and can handle at least 250hp and some. The gearbox is going to get some heavy abuse and they are cheap and very accessable to replace if i need to(In NZ).

Yup, i just kept wrapping insutation tape round the release bearing shaft till the central hole in the bellhousing was a tight fit, and then drill some holes....

the space between the 2 plates has got some wheel nuts welded in there, keeping them the right distance apart, and then wheel bolts holding it all together,,,,

Simples.

hardest part was captivating the vectra release bearing to stop it coming apart, bescause the original clip wouldnt slide over the input shaft splines.
