I would agree with injection being better than carb if you can set it up properly. Its a damn sight easier to get an engine running on a carb than it is on a first time install injection system. I am pretty sure a standard hotwire setup would work ok with that setup anyway. It wont be optimal but it will work well.
As for the Adams route, I guess your paying for all the experience but as you say he is pricing himself out of the Rover V8 market now.

hiya,
I am trying the answer this question for myself at the moment.
Currently i plan to use the GEMS efi on my current 4.6 build for my westfield.
I have spoke to mark and he is very knowledgeable about all things V8, and his knowledge of the GEMS system is no less.
According to mark the GEMS system is the best you can get to run the v8, and was the best of its time. This might not be true now with aftermarket ECU's been cheaper and easier to map yourself, so maybe he is trying to protect his own market.
Bit speaking to V8D they say the GEMS in a light car might not be the best solution, as i could not react quick enough through the lamba sensors, so they suggest DTA, omex & emerald or megasquirt.
And i am like you, i can build the engine, but all this talk about mapping and setting up worries me, as its taking me 18 months+ to find, build & modifiy a 4.6 engine, how long do i need to spend mapping.
I still think the GEMS would be an exellent system, and dont forget there are 2 chips in the ecu, one for iginition & one for injection, and any modified car will need these, but it just depends what you need from the engine.
I dont think there is a wrong or right answer here, just lots of advice and experiences that may help you make a decision.
Thats why i have not made one yet, and am still in the changing my mind phase, been this way since the start...lol
I can send you some GEMs info mark sent me, if your interested, it might help you understand what mark does.

Can't sgree more with Eliot about the price of Mark Adams chips especially as you need two for the later 4.0/4.6 engines.
The base cost of the carrier and E Prom is about £20 off e-bay so the profit margin is enormous an clearly he could reduce the price for a bigger volume market.
The hotwire system is simpler as you only need the fuelling chip but he still wants £400 + and I'm not sure that includes any fine tuning.
Another possibility is Austec who are down near Gatwick/Crawley, they say they can re-program the hotwire chip, not sure how, or they can upgrade with a Mark Adams chip and fine tune it on their rolling road backed up with on the road final tuning.
Alternatively a Megasquirt can be bought from Phil at Extra EFI which he will supply with a base map to get you running at a cost of around £300 + a bit of rolloing road time to fine tune so probably around £500 + cost of sorting out the engine loom EFI pump and return line and a 3 Bar regulator.
To buy a new carb, manifold and calibration kit is going to cost in the region of £600 at todays exchange rate + abit of Rolling road time to get it right. so you pays your money and make your choice.

Having mapped a few cars now really all it takes is a wideband O2 sensor, a cheap laptop a road and some time.
You are then getting a completely customised set up and if you cchange anything you can remap it.
I was intending this to be a lower tech approach but seeing the costs of carbs etc it seems the high tech approach will cost a similar amount.
