What's the funniest mistake you've made with your car?

I'm not quite sure but I am certain my nan told me a story about my grandad....

Apparently he put his axle in the wrong way round, left wheel was on the right hand side and vice versa. I'm not sure how he did this, maybe my nan is confused on the issue. It had to have been some car with an axle that could fit either way, like some old thing on leaf springs.

Anyway, the story goes he put this car back together with the axle in arse about face, put it in 1st and tried to move forwards and flew backwards instead

Seen that happen with a trike, axle was wrong way round with the same results. It was a reliant robin axle in this case.

Many years ago I had a NSU RO80 which had a strange semi auto gearbox, which had a oil feed from the engine. I had replaced the old wankel engine with a Ford V4 after many attempts of getting the gearbox to fit I finally got it all fitted and started the engine, to my great delight it started on the button, not so good was when the oil got into the gearbox. At some point I had knocked the car into gear, the car drove forwards and flattened my toolbox before driving straght into the bonnet which I had carefully placed at the end of the garage out of harms way, sold the car not long after that

Over 20 years ago, with not a lot of experience, a friend and I were removing the half shafts from my P6B for the first time in order to replace the universal joints.

We started early in the morning, and by 10pm that night we were just about done. Finally finished so we thought..then to our horror after having refitted the half shafts, on go the wheels, but wait....what is that clonking while rotating the wheel?

Sure enough one of the universal joints had been fitted the wrong way around, so the grease nipple was fouling against the yoke when the shaft was at a certain angle..

Out it came again....amused we were not. Never has a universal joint be removed so quickly. We certainly lived and learned. A mistake that has never been repeated.

Was working on ute in old ladys garage, had just fited up exhaust systems and engine after doing transplant. Engine was in a running state, was late at night everyone was asleep, i was the only one up in garage working away (garage part of the house). A couple of mates came round to have a look at the ute, although late at night and everyone in bed i thought id fire it up and give em a listen to the v8 rumble. Sitting on seat with left foot on throttle and right leg still out of car gave a few pumps of gas and wound her over, engine fired into life and fired ute through the back of my old ladys garage!!! Hadnt set up auto shifter at the time and was obviously in drive!! Made a hell off a raket destroyed garage wall pretty well, and smashed bbq, outdoor seating ect that was behind garage wall, ute faired pretty well though. Neither mum or her partner woke up to this surprisingly!! Definetly the most embarrasing moment of my mechanical escapades, insurance covered damage to wall thank god! Wont be making that mistake again in a hurry! However still havent wired up gearbox to stop engine from widing over when in gear

Just had quite an amusing incident.

Just been striping my new engine. Took off the cylinder head, had a quick look at the bores etc....Number one liner looked low as if it had slipped. Immediately I went 'oh ****** hell' without thinking what I was doing, stormed off in to the house to get my old man to come and look. Noticed all the other cylinders on that bank were the same.

Only left the head gasket on lol durrrrrrr.

i recall being asked ,
if i knew anyone who would "chip" a classic ford capri v6,
with mechanical fuel injection,
i had to say no.
but if you find someone let me know.
i`m still waiting !!!!!!!!!

When I built my V8 Sierra I bought bits up as and when I could afford them including a complete 3 door Cosworth rear axle which i fitted and forgot about...........when the engine was fitted and ran for the first time I took it for a spin, the diff sounded a bit noisey and then locked solid

the company I had bought the axle off had drained the oil for transport, they did not tell me and I did not check
