I couldn't resist buying another v8

Post by dnb »

Since the TVR is still sick and I miss having a v8 kicking around the place I have just bought a low mileage 2001 4.6 Range Rover Vogue.

It's just the thing for cruising the motorways towing my cars to track days and stuff - TVR Griffith and Impreza (which I'm not allowed to mention here because it needs another 4 cylinders... I have two of them - does that count? ;) ;) )

Just need to find a car trailer now.

I'm looking at early 4.6 RR's too at the moment. Got 3 lined up to look at this weekend to try and understand what makes a "good" one.

What's the budget? There are some serious bargains out there :)

I would favour the 2001 model (registered before Y reg for tax reasons) so it has the Bosch ECU and long runner inlet. I know you have the ability to sort all that out yourself as-and-when, but if you're like me there's not enough time in the day for everything!

Budget is only 2k or less as its 4th motor just to mess around with.
Just looked at 3, first one had knackered front air springs and was too expensive, 2nd one tatty and dented, 3rd one was nice, but need a complete respray and had coolant in the footwells.
So I a worthwile experience to see all the different faults on them!

What a shame I didn't know you were looking Elliot.

Friend of mine just sold his 2001 4.6, mint condition, 86,000, full Land Rover service history and all he got for it was £2200

Must admit - I didn't realise just how fast my dakar is - I floored it on the test drive and was thinking how slow it was.
Wouldn't mind dropping some turbo's on it - but would need to figure out how to megasquirt the engine first and get the BECM to work with it.

Elliot most things are slow compared to the Dakar.

Having said that the P38 is biblically slow even in 4.6 guise. The gearbox soaks up everyhting the engine has.

What about using an aftermarket gearbox controller as well?
