Do I really need a lightened flywheel?

Hmmm there are a few flywheels on djev8 site actually....

Well thought I was sorted but back on the search now

and got a postal claim for the ally one which didn't arrive

Wouldnt mind a steel light one but need to find one with a good price! DJE have a lightweight one on fleabay, any advice or ideas?

How much difference will say a 22lb one make from the std 32lb? Just wondering whether to go for a fairly standard cheap one for now and keep my eyes out for an ally one in the future, I am also using a 7 1/2" twin plate clutch so as it is a lot smaller diameter it must require less power to spin it up...

The Mcleod Ally flywheel (which is the most commonly available unit for the RV8) isn't drilled for a 7.5" clutch as standard, and I think you're going to either have to drill whatever flywheel you get or go with a pricy racing piece to use that clutch.

Yup I was aware that I would probably have to get whichever I choose drilled, is it worth getting it balanced with the clutch even though the rest of my engine isn't? (from factory std)

Are there any other flywheels out there that will fit the V8 crank with the same tooth spacing on the ring gear? I know some are interchangeable but didn't know if anyone knows of any for the RV8?

With a tiny clutch half the size of the flywheel it seems pointless having all that material outside the 'used' area- so 2nd Q- any reason why a std flywheel can't be drilled all around the outside to reduce the inertia? The only force on that area (apart from holding itself together) is from the starter motor to the crank....

Thinking aloud! Any input more than welcome!

I finally found a flywheel- but it is a little heavier than what I was/am after! Range Rover one, which means about an inch of solid iron

Got a couple of prices between £40 & £50 for lightening it (though I dont know if they know how much has got to come off yet! And about £25 for drilling and tapping for the 7.5" clutch, just wanted to know if they are good enough prices and if I can take a big ring shaped chunk out of the outside front edge as the clutch is so small it doesn't need any of the outer surface!

I believe some of the multiplate clutches can come as a complete assembly that bolts to a auto flexplate, with the final pressure plate that is normally on the flywheel, as the base part of the clutch assembly.

A flex plate with the torque converter torous removed is a hell of a lot lighter than most flywheels

I nearly asked about that! I have the light auto flywheel that came with the engine- I thought about unbolting the small middle bit and replacing it with a 10mm thick disk... This would be extremely light- but not sure if it would push the clutch to far out towards the gearbox upsetting release fork geometry... Any ideas?
