relay,s advice wanted

Post by dirk »

hi , after not having any joy on a few bike forums I thought i would try you guys .

I am building a Harley chopper , what i need to know is what type of relay will hold a flasher unit in power wise . On each handle bar there is a push button switch. When it is pressed the indicators flash but when you release the push button they stop.
what type of relay will hold the power in until i press the button again ? I imagine that i will need two relays to do the job .
I have been told about latching relays , but could not find any info .
also is a 5 pin relay a latching relay .

The wiring harness has been changed and the factory alarm has been removed , the alarm was also the flasher unit and several other things.

thanks

You dont need to bother making up a latching circuit with relays Dirk. Just change the buttons from "momentary contact" type, to "latching" type.

One push makes and holds the contact. Second push disengages the contact.
There are many type available from RS components and Maplins etc.

I would second this as the way to go. Your buttons are just push to make so it gets a bit more complicated to do a latching circuit on the release front. Are you using the original Harley relay as I am surprised it doesnt work the way you want it to in the first place.

hi , the buttons on the Harley switches are built into the whole handle bar controls and i did not want to change them . Unless the insides could be modified. Not a lot of room in there. I think relays might be less work.
As a standard bike the indicators work via the alarm , it controls everything on the bike and the relays are built into the alarm.

The ones in the link above look like what i am after.

unless you can suggest any other option's I just wondered about 5 pin relays if i could get from a breakers yard but if they are not all latching type relays it would be hard to identify the right ones

thanks.
