Rx7 V8

Post by ppyvabw »

Im thinking of selling my mgb and getting an RX7. I know where there is a good cheap one for sale. I would have it as an everday car and build a v8 at my leisure. Is this a difficult conversion. I have found one page on the site with such a conversion. What sort of power can I put through the transmission without busting it and are there any major difficulties in fitting the engine?

Any comments?

...just in case you don't want another RV8 (koff koff) there's a good description of an '93-'95 3rd gen RX-7 / Chevy LT-1 V-8 conversion here.

All the parts can come from Granny's Speed Shop. Might give you some ideas

Cheers,

Sorry not a clue.

But what you can generally say is that if it still exists our American friends have stuck a V8 in it. And if they haven't the Aussies have. Must be all that cheap fuel

RX7s I know a little about (3 rusting away on the drive). If you go to RX7club.com there is a whole forum there dealing with engine swaps where you can find out all the various things that have been done.

Thanks Bill. Looks interesting. I shall have a good look at that.

Indeedi, I went to australia about five years ago to see relatives. They asked me how much petrol was up here when I said 80 or 90 a litre, they thought I meant cents. They were really shocked when i said i meant pence, they were only paying about 90 cents a litre back then. Around a third I think what we pay. Shockin

Hi,
I own an RX-7 Mk1 with that conversion, is it the same as mine you are after or the later wedgy shape? I've seen RV8's in all three Marks so it can be done. For any RX-7 conversion though you will need to change the rear axle as well as the engine and gearbox. This is because the gear ratios on the original axle are calulated for a high revving rotary and not a low revving V8. Keeping the original axle would mean that you acceleration will be brutal!! but your top speed will be around 95mph :-))
On the power front I'm running around 200Bhp with no problems, but admittedly that is with a Capri LSD rear axle now.

Cheers
Kevin

Thanks Kevin. The one I had seen was a 2nd gen one. I had a proper look and it was a rust bucket but might keep my eye out for another one. Thanks for the advice
