Strange noise from RRC front axle

Post by dpcwright »

I recently rebuilt a front axle for my RRC right through from the diff to the front hubs.
When I installed this test driving it seemed ok until it hit a bump and it then starting making a loud noise best described as a stick run along the park railings.
If I stop the noise stops and starts again if it hits another bump.
I have checked the end float on the half shafts and they are within spec.
There is a very small amount of movement in one wheel. I have no idea of this problem Any suggestions?

Any idea which part of the axle it's coming from?

I really can not be sure - I have tried leaning out of the window to try to tell but it is impossible
Some one suggested the diff but I can not understand how going over a bump would affect it - so my feeling is one of the hubs

It sounds like there's something floating about in the axle casing somewhere.......

I can't think of an easy way to locate the fault, apart from stripping it down and looking for witness marks.....

Cracked it - insufficient preload on the swivel bearings - now it is perfect-
Thanks to all

Must have been the CV joint binding / loaded oddly then.

At least you've sorted it out. Well done.
