Axles: which ones
Moderator: phpBB2 - Administrators
Thanks chaps. Stevie re weight I was taking the 9" as the 'default', would you say the 8.8 is any/much lighter?
Been srching the net, found a ton of conflicting/duff info. Places say the Volvo is the same as the 8.8 which it isn't, the 8.8 seems bigger/beefier which must be why the bricks users are talking about them often.
What does the panel make of Ford 8" vs 8.8" vs 9" in terms of strength? One site says the 8" can't take more than 300hp but someone I know is planning to put over 400 bhp/torque through one.
Although I'm having 300hp/340lbs at the mo I want to be able to handle 400ish further on.

Ford 9" = removeable carrier so easier to change ratios, extra bearing on pinnion end = stronger.
Ford 8.8" = lots af ratios available good for 300 in stock form.
Various options, 28 spline shafts standard, 31 spline available, Tracloc standard, various spools available,
Don't know about the 8"

8" are reasonably strong, but to get them to handle big power serious work is needed,, The only thing that breaks axles is traction, so if you dont plan on using huge supper grippy tires a 8" will probably survive all the abuse you can throw at it, Andy Harris was running a 8"LSD axle with welded on flanges!!!!! and slicks well into the 12s a few years ago, I know this for a fact, as I ran that same axle under my Mk1 for several years without a problem,
If you really want to upgrade a 8" Andy Robinson can fit a 9" gears into a 8" case.

ive no idea how heavy mine actually is, or indeed a 9". TBH I cant see why there would be a big difference.Alley Kat wrote:Thanks chaps. Stevie re weight I was taking the 9" as the 'default', would you say the 8.8 is any/much lighter?

I thought most 9" used like a pressed steel casing ? Id have thought it would be relatively light, as opposed to the heavy cast 8.8"
With hindsight, the fact the 9" is a front loader, would make me want to use one. The ability to change ratios so easily would be good. But at the time, I wasnt aware of such things.
You can see a lot of pics of my 8.8" install here.

If yo can get one cheap, which I believe is possible, go ahead and use one. You wont break it.
my Torsen LSD was around $500, custom Moser shafts circa £300 or so, and the 4-link kit a bloody rip off from the UK.
C-clip eliminators are circa $120 or so I think. Not really required though.
CWP's are about $200.
All in all, a pretty cheap axle to use. Other LSD's will come in cheaper than the Torsen I used. I near laughed when the guy told me they were expensive, and he said $500 lol
Try buying a Quaife !!!!!

Jenson Interceptor came with 4HA and a LSD (2.88) Ratio.4HA doesn't come with LSD in live axle form so far as I know but you can take the lsd from a v12 jag diff and put it in the live axle casing. You can get a live axle from a Scimitar, LSD from an XJS or similar. Not sure I would recommend it in this case tho.
I know that as I bought one for the Project AJPSprintV8,
Just need to get it narrowed to fit.
Even bought a spare Diff (3.54) LSD of course
