In car advance/retard
Hi, is it possible to rig up a system where you turn a knob (to cable like a brake bias system) or pull a stop type cable which turns the dizzy a couple of degrees for when you want to use nitrous or maybe even for easier starting?!
Nothing is at (or near) the running stage yet so havent tested it all but I thought it was pretty important to retard the ignition with nos!

only if going above 75bhp nitrous,
Regards Tony C (COOPS)

Re: In car advance/retard
no reason why not , the old motorbikes had it for years , it was controlled by a bowden cable and a lever on the handle bars , all it did was move the dizzy/points base plate ( the old bikes went from a magneto to a dizzy)topcatproduction wrote:Hi, is it possible to rig up a system where you turn a knob (to cable like a brake bias system) or pull a stop type cable which turns the dizzy a couple of degrees for when you want to use nitrous or maybe even for easier starting?!

dizzy degree altering
Hi Guys,
Now this is a bit of a long answer so I apologise in advance (or is that retard).
Ok, RPi engineering do a thing for LPG called an advance by retard. It is an electronic box of gizmos that alter the timing depending on the fuel being used.
As it effectively alters the spark introduction to the mixture it should be suitable for NOS also.
Here is the theory:
If you set up an engine to run on petrol then you naturally set the spark point to give max ignition with minimum incomplete burning and without pinking (detonation).
Now add another fuel that may run for a while, like LPG, but in this instance use NOS.
If you set up your timing for the max advance you need i.e. about 8-10deg advanced for LPG when the LPG system is selected the box of tricks does absolutely nothing to the timing.
Change from LPG to petrol and the box of tricks retards the ignition by a degree that you can control thus retarding the ignition. Your normal vacuum advance works just as it always had, under load, cruising, kick down etc.... so no changes are made to the mechanical aspect.
It is called advance by retard as you cannot slow down something that has not really occured but you CAN slow down something that has occured by a controllable amount.
Thus if a spark is needed later than the point at which the energy is pulsed, the box of tricks simply delays the pulse until the determined amount.
Now convert this from a LPG product to NOS and you have an electronic solution to the problem without having to hack your dizzy and advance / retard mechanical aspects to pieces.
Give them a call and discuss it. They are very helpful as there are more than one type of advance by retard.
