can someone help (sorted now thanks )

Post by herpmad »

well new here and a complete engine mong been floating around for a few week but now im stuck

ok over the last few days ive been trying to sort out why my engine wont start after i have had it running when i first got the lr

the engine i was told was a range rover 3.5 v8, on searching the engine number i found out its a efi Auto 9.35:1 cr 1986 onwards how ever it has SU carbs not injectors (found this out when buying spark plug as 3.5 lr and both 3.5 range rovers have different spark plugs) so now im really confused i now have two sets of plugs one for the lr v8 (BPR5E) and one for a carb 3.5 v8 range rover (BP5ES) how ever i think i may have the wronge ones again as even though it has a carb at some point it would have had injectors, to top it off the engine still isnt working im getting no spark off the plugs that are in which are the BP5ES and so i started looking for distributors but this has lead to more problems, the number on the one fitted is 41873A which on reading is electronic (not sure what this means) and i cant find the amp which is suposed to be fitted so with my very limited knowlage (by limited i mean little ) im really stuck

and i could do with some help and advise

as far as i no this is the only engine problem there is (famous last words) as said i had ot runnning when i drove it off the trailer and parked it the only thing i have done is change the plugs oh and we had to use a booster box to start her

For spark plugs, Champion N9YC will work no problems.

With your distributor, hmmm, :? no doubt another forum member with much more knowledge than I on that topic will help you there.

Are you sure you put the leads back on in the right order?

Don't mess with anything else till you got back to where you were.
Plug type is not so important at the moment.

Confirm or comment.

It was running when you got it?

Running O.K (smoothly all cylinders)?

What made you mess with it?

Exactly what did you do?

No spark at a plug with it out?

Spark at the lead from coil to distributor?

Has the distributor still got a rotor arm in?

Spark from any lead out of distributor?

More questions later...

It was running when you got it? yes once boosted by a box

Running O.K (smoothly all cylinders)? yes sound ok timing slighlty out (my assumption)

What made you mess with it? was told the spark plugs were old and mixed types so needed changing

Exactly what did you do? changed spark plugs

No spark at a plug with it out? no spark

Spark at the lead from coil to distributor? no spark

Has the distributor still got a rotor arm in? yes

Spark from any lead out of distributor? no

just been looking at the manual and the distributer number 41873A dosnt match any in the manual listed

im thinking now it may be the coil but with the numbers not mattching on distributer dose this mean a hole new system???

the dissy will either look like this

or like this this if it's an electronic one
http://www.v8engines.com/Gallery-2/Diss ... 20veiw.jpg

one has the amp under the coil and one has the amp bolt to the side of the Dissy

carbs on a EFI engine will run just fine and visversa so no problem there ..
the coil will need to be a 12volt one UNBALLASTED !

the other thing is have you had the dissy cap off ?
if so make sure the centre carbon oin in the middle is still there ?

and also take the HT lead from the coil off the dissy cap and see if you get a spark from that to earth ?
but becareful it's a far old jolt off it ..
if not then it's likely to be the AMP thats gone ..
see post for IGNITION UP GRADE
remember it's only a bodge if it DOSN'T worK

That dizzy is a 35DM8.

That might help in a search on this forum if the previous advise doesn't sort it.

many thanks ok any one got a gd picture of one of these wired up im convinced now that its because the amp isnt attached to any thing so need to sort this out but not sure where all the wires go and the pic and diagram in the manual dont really show that well

worth a try before i go out a buy new

are there no wires on the Dissy at all ?
even if they are broken off there should be some sign of them
if so it's easy enough to reattach wires to it inside , and it's so simple to redo the coil wires too ..
you could even get rid of the amp under the coil and replace it with the much better aftermarket one
