It could. In fact, it ought to given that the design is 40 years younger!
The only bad thing I've heard is timing chain problems, because at least one of them gets negative tension in it because of the arrangement of lobes on one of the cams. This has bad effects on the tensioner. This might have been fixed though.

The tensioners have been fixed, took them a couple of years to do it though and they don't have the nikasil bores anymore. Will be expensive to tune no doubt but who cares with 400 bhp on tap stock. I believe the charged one doesn't use variable valve timing either which makes things a lot easier on the ECU front.
Anybody know the dimensions of these engines, cant find sizes anywhere.

Closest I can get is;
"The AJ-V8 is approximately 12 inches shorter than Jaguar’s AJ16 in-line six-cylinder engine.

It is one nice engine! The wife has an XK8 4.0 unsupercharged but we also tried out the supercharged version. It is as smooooooth as silk, produces power from nowhere and revs to 7K . Driving around town it gives 18 to 20 to the gallon but on a run will give 31 with an overall about 23 to 24 all in a ton and a half of car. Post 1999 they are iron liner and the timming chain tensioner problem was fixed at the same time. Had it two and a half years and no hassels at all in about 24k miles.
Its 25.5 to 26 long (bell housing face to front of furthest forward pully) 26 wide ( the exhaust manifolds go straight down so dont stick out beyong the heads and 24 high sump to top of inlet manifold. the Throttle body sticka out behing the engine over the bell housing about 6"but this be moved, come and measure it if want.

poppet valves rule!
i waw talking to some of the jaguar owners at the BRIT-CAR event at wicksteed park a few weeks ago and those engines have really bad out of balance cranks , one chap was saying that everyone he knew had the same problem , crank out of balance by 40grams and it had pretty much destroyed the engine needing a £4000 rebuild
and they where all these ...

and they where all these ...

remember it's only a bodge if it DOSN'T worK
Not our experience, as I said the engine is as smooth as silk (very different from the RR V8s I had), I certainly would have noticed 40gm
. The one we have has done 85K miles and still is like new. The people I have met who have an XK are generally on their second or third, but I am aware that there are alot of "I know someone who.." stories about them.
