Range Rover 3.9 not starting...

Post by dicky »

Just got myself a 1992 Range Rover 3.9.

First day I had it was starting with no troubles.

Second day I drove to MOT garage, engine nice and hot.
It started cutting out and then failing to start.
It would do this while driving with throttle and I noticed the rev counter stopped working and the ECU illuminate.

It now fails to start, lots of fuel in the tank and when it fails to start there is strong smell of fuel so is fludding?

Any ideas?

sounds like something to do with the ignition if its flooding. Check the king lead, cap and rotor arm and see if you have any sparks at the plugs. Check your getting voltage at the coil and general connections between dizzy and coil.

Was going to get the girlfriend to check for HT on the king lead later on.

Never got round to checking as started raining yesterday as it crawled into my drive.

Cheers.

Ok managed to get it to start tonight, when I first tried to start it the ECU light was lit constantly and wouldnt start.

Played with the coil conections and still the same.

Took the king lead off to test it against the plenum while i cranked it over and the ECU light went out and an orange spark was present. Would of prefered a big blue spark but hey.

Put king lead back in and it fired up so I quickly parked it in my garage.

I didn't think the ignition system was part of the ECU?

Where does it pick up the state of the ignition?

Coil negative connector.

I'd change/test the ignition amplifier. The symptoms sound a lot like a problem there.

Thats what I have been told.

Just looked at wiring diagram, the ECU does connect to the coil - LT.

Right I will get onto it now and sort it for good.

I was quoted £42 for an ignition amp.

The rev counter fluctuating points to the coil - feed connection as the ECU ses the coil feed for the rev counter also.

Black/white wire at the coil with a 6.8KOhm resistor located approx' 6" up the lead. From there it dissapears into the loom but you can always do a continutiy check at the ECU under the drivers seat to make sure its connected
