WD40, left overnight, a hard piece of plastic and a scotchbrite, brings them up like new :D

Fairy power spray to get the worst of the crud off then finnish them in the dishwasher.

Was going to suggest oven cleaner gel, which is an ammonia-based glop that Robert dyas has & prob others. Removes carbon without damaging whats underneath. it's not the caustic type in aerosols. But that gel in the link seems very much like the same thing... Gloves & ventilation job, it's well fierce...!

I tried some of the Carbon Remover gel, but it did nothing.
Even tried leaving it over night.

in the end I used a green pan pad and gif and elbow grease.

The carbon on my must have been 0.2mm think though.
Current V8 car TVR 400SE 240 BHP
Current Project TVR Tasmin Race, with 3.9 running at 230 BHP
Currently building a 4.6 300 BHP Xbolted Engine for it. Solid Lifters and Group A rockers, Stange 4 heads, Pocketed piston, fully balanced.

The bio oven gel stuff is very good, spray on, rinse off. Skin friendly also.

I normally dump my old cruddy stuff in a tank of petrol for a few days. A quick scrub, then powerspray and the dishawasher.
Works ok for me...

Nitromors paint stripper is excellent stuff for removing the black tarry stuff. Safer than caustic oven cleaner on aluminium too.
