Well I managed to find time to take it round the road today... and it seems fine. In fact before putting the rocker cover filter breather on it would hesitate a bit when easing the foot down from low revs in a high gear. It seems to pick up a wee bit better. So that's a result.
mgbv8: yeah the breather goes to the carb breather ports, not to the manifold! Only a little tweak was needed.
Fitting K&N filters (the conical things that go on the end of the carbs directly) makes such a huge difference to the v8's. We've also got a Land Rover 90 with the original lowly tuned v8 in it. On the standard air filter setup it really wasn't much better than the 2.5litre 4 cylinder engine. I fitted K&N's with BBW needles in the SU's , as suggested by the Hardcastle book, and it really shifts.
