Suitable lifters/pushrods for my new build?

Righto, although I haven't got them in my hand yet, I've managed to find some adjustable rockers aka Group A, for my planned new engine build.

I currently run a 'Lund LE1' cam, which is similar to the Piper 214, and actually grinded by Piper. Spec is;

262 degrees (symmetrical) with 0.433 lift (inlet/exhaust)


Now, what would be the best combination of lifters and pushrods for the cam and adj. rockers? I was thinking Heavy Duty pushrods and some Rhodes lifters??

Yes that should work ok although I dont think you would have to go rhodes if you wanted to save a few quid. Your cams not that big so should idle ok without them. On top of the saved cash you will not get the tappet noise you get with rhodes lifters. I take it this cam is new? If not stick with the lifters you have or replace cam and lifters as a set.

Should also add make sure the radius of the rockers match the rover pushrods. I have no idea if they are the same or not, maybe Demo can confirm as he uses group A rockers.

yeah I'm aware that the rockers need 'cup-and-ball' type arrangement wrt the pushrods. The cam I have is in an engine that's not actually been started yet lol, so yeah essentially new. Problem is I have no idea what lifters are in it at the moment, and I won't do until I decide to fit the new one

Alternatively, I have been offered a Hurricane came with matching solid lifters, pushrods etc. for sweet f-a, or a set of hi-rev lifters (new) which would go with my current cam. Hmm decisions?!

hurricane cam is a hydraulic cam so solid lifters are no use.

Might take a punt on the hi-rev lifters though :lol:

Yes thats the kind of thing your looking for. Rhodes lifters are high rev but they also bleed down which is what causes the tappet noise. I dont mind it (I drive a diesel everyday so what do I care lol) and they do give better idle and more low torque on bigger cams. I dont think Tony even uses them and he has a pretty lumpy cam, each to their own.

hmm, well i drive a diesel too so I'm sure I can cope with the noise lol! I've read they give better mpg at lower revs due to the bleed down ability - have you actually experienced this or is it just BS?

I guess they could because it effectively makes it a smaller cam.

Rule number 1 never calculate MPG on a V8 it will only make you :sob

lol yeah well i've been trying to charter a shell wagon to follow me around when the MG is done, but the buggers might be on strike :lol:

i use the crane hi rev lifters,
did think about rhoads then thought nah :lol:

If you have adjustable rockers I would opt for stock RV8 heavy pushrods and Rhodes lifters.
Sod the very slight tappet noise at low rpm. You will feel the difference at 3700rpm when you want some more push.

It all depends on what you want from the motor really. Mine is very well behaved on the road. But on the track it is a bit of a beast once the lifters bring the cam on at 3700 rpm with the gas.

My stock 4.6 with blower cam and rhoades lifters gives me a 12.2 on the strip off gas all day long That is pretty quick. Bung some gas in there and you will be in the 11's all day long mate.

And Ill bet Tony did'nt even hear it when Ill was talking to him with the engine running at the Classic Ford Show :lol: :lol:
The noise is more noticeble inside the car than outside.

I am running them on a Viper Hurricane cam and have an increased vacuum of 3inhg over the standard lifters.

Cool, HD pushrods and rhodes lifters it is then.

I'd gonna drive the car on the road mostly, but opan on usign on the pod and track a fair bit when its running, so I dont realyl want it to be completely undriveable on the road!

I ran Rhoads lifters for about 60K and yes they do what they claim in terms of softening a long cam at low revs. However on a hot restart when the car has been sat just a little while (say at a petrol station) they tended to have leaked right down and so made a a god awful clatter on restart which to the unitiated sounds like your engine is k'ned. After 20 secs of running or so they quieten down again.

Not sure I'd run them again
