balance pipe

Post by plank22 »

looked through all the other post and couldnt see this mentioned. I have a complete seperate system to each bank of my 3.9 and have just heard about balance pipes. I have yet to put the engine in so dont know if one would make a difference. How they and do they work please???

They definitely work, although I'm not sure why. I believe there's an optimum location for them too.

Hi
I believe the ideal ballance pipe joins in at 6 to 10 inches from each collector, but up to about 18 will still give benifit, the pipe should have a sectional area about 3/4 that of the exhaust and if possable join at 90 deg to the exhaust pipe. It should be between 8 and 18 inches long. Basically a chunk of pipe joining the two sides is better than nothing and make it reasonably short and as close to the collectors as you can get it (generally across at the front face of the bell housing behind the sump without cooking the starter).
