What is this part - do I need it????
I'm building a GT40 replica with a Rover V8. I'm having real problems getting the engine far enough forward to get my driveshafts (Renault Turbo g/box) to run straight.
I'm going to make a new water pump pulley myself, as I believe I have the shortest one and that's still not short enough. I discovered another problem tonight, and that is that the front crank pulley also hits the cross member on my chassis. I have noticed that I can unbolt the front section of this pulley (3 bolts) which will make my engine shorter and might give me the space I need - but do I need this part? Is it a balancing device or something and will I cause problems removing it? I only need a pulley for waterpump and alternator.
I have pics of it if anyone can help.

you can take them off so long as you still have something in the right line to drive the pump. Depending on where the engine came from it could have all sorts of pulleys on it for power steering, air con and all that. You might have problems with the pump pulley as the actual body/shaft is usually the problem and not the pulley itself.

probably better if you do post the pics up.
there are methods of getting pumps shorter, the bolt on flange can be pressed off and a pulley made that will give you an interference fit on the shaft and less of an offset, , from memory the shaft is 19mm, it can be cut down to remove the excess shaft with a cutting disc but watching out for putting too much heat into it and damaging the seals, I used a renault 5 pulley fron a inline engined car, pushed right on and saved me about 20mm.

Ian - did the Renault 5 water pump pulley come off any particular year of car. It would save me a lot of time if I could use this instead of turning one up myself from a billet.

Sorry guys, but these seem to have come out a bit larger than I planned - but at least they are here for you to see.
I have 'jigsawed' the bulkhead away to give me more clearance - what I really need to do now is keep the first part of the pulley off (first pic) and then machine the locating teeth that are meant to hold in onto main pulley assembly (second pic). Is this OK? I know it sounds daft, but I really need every millimetre I can get!

No problem with deleting the lugs, Mine went years ago, Just to be sure, does your main bottom pulley have a groove around its circumference, just trying to ensure you are starting with the best bits for shortening, IE P5/6 bottom pulley

The shortest combination is SD1 front cover P5/6 water pump and crank damper pulley.

obviously the problem lies with the bottom pulley hitting the chassis cross member, if things are really this tight there must be ways of modifying the tube to move it up, down or around the pulley, welded or bolted it must be feasable to route the tube around the pulley, of course it depends on how much you need to move the engine forward, but im sure its not too hard to to gain another 25mm++ by re routing the tube.

What make of chassis do you have? Looks possibly like a KVA mk1 and there were all kinds of problems with these.
Now a long shot
Are your rear wheels centralised in the wheelarch?
If not you may need to adjust the whole upright etc rearwards
That in itself would lessen the necessity to move the engine so far forward.
