RV8 VW Panel van

Post by Danny-Boy »

Hello all,
I have a list of concerns regarding my V8 so any help or advice would be appreciated. Please bare in mind i`m no genius so some of my questions may be daft but i am a newbie.

1. The engine idle is a bit rough and lumpy and ther seems to be a less suction from the left hand SU than the right, would this be the cause of the poor running?,it seems to ok when revved, also the revs are rising and falling at idle, only by about 500rpm,but its noticable.

2.I have put breather filters on the the rocker covers, should i remove them and put hoses to the each of the carb breather inlets which are currently blocked off?If i do this will i need flame traps?

3.I need to source a throttle cable, inner and outer as the standard one was damaged and too short, ive seen one RJES for a subaru conversion ,they say it would be suitable for other coversions, but its 40 quid????? Any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Danny

It`s mine and i`ll wash it as fast as i like.

1 - Have you balanced the carbs? If not, get hold of a gunsons carbalancer and balance them.

3 - A bicycle brake cable makes a good throttle cable, depending on how long you need it. And you can use electrical 'choc block' on the ends of the cable (loop it through the hole and back on itself into the choc block)

You could have an air leak (spray WD40 round all the joints) or your carbs need balanced. I cant remember if the carbs are linked in the manifold but either way it wont do any harm. This involves setting the throttle plates (idle screw) so that both carbs are passing the same amount of air. You can buy gauges for this or you can do it with a bit pipe to your ear and the other end at the carb inlet. You will hear the difference and you adjust until there isn't any.

For the cable you could try speedy cables. Give them what its to fit and the length and they will make it for you..

Hello Danny-Boy,

The SUs need to be balanced, each flowing the same volume of air.

If the mixture is also out, this can also effect idle quality. You must not make any mixture adjustments until the carburettors are balanced for correct air flow.

If you refit the flame trap hoses from each rocker cover, you will need to fit flame traps, one into each hose.

There is also an engine breather filter situated on the offside at the rear of the engine. This filter must show the arrow on it facing downwards, as the air flows in through this filter and returns via the rocker cover through the flame traps and into the carburettors.

Once you do this, you will need to recheck the balance, as it most likely will now have changed.

Now you can check the mixture. Using a rolling road is the most accurate way, but assuming the needles are correct for the application, and the air filters are clean, turn each mixture adjustment screw located on the front of each carburettor, one at a time, in an anticlockwise direction. The moment the engine speed starts to drop stop turning and then turn the screw back in clockwise for half of one turn. Repeat for the other carburettor.

Best of luck,

Ron.
