Core plug replacement
I have new core plugs and have the old ones out............what is the best method of installing them, and what type of sealant is used........i leary of using silicone..........i also remember seeing a video on you tube on this from say RPI but can't find it now.....anyone

i get a socket thats a nice fit inside the core plug,
smear a bit of blue hylomar around the core plug edge, then tap home into the block by hitting the socket evenly,

Its a blue none setting sealer http://www.hylomar.co.uk/universalblue.htm , Its a really good sealer and you will probably get some form of it locally. Personally for core plugs i prefer red hermetite http://www.hammerite-automotive.com/her ... pounds.htm which is a setting sealer.
Neither seems available here in Canada, although the website says you can order it and due to shortages in the USA it will take 3-4 weeks to ship...........can i not use like any high temp gasket maker like Permatex but be careful and not use too much that it seeps into the water jacket

depends what permatex your on about they do dozens of products. By the way a quick look at their site shows they do hylomar. http://www.permatex.com/products/Automo ... ealant.htm
Is it worth changing them if they look fine.
I've done a full re-build, and have got a new set. but the ones in there seem fine.
Sould they be changed or is it the case if there not broken don't try and fix it. don't want to cause a problem that was not there.

Yes had a re-bore but the block was washed in a parts washer. plus has been jet washed and flushed.kiwicar wrote:While I think of it you are talking about the core plugs not the oil gallery plugs, the latter must come out so you can clean out any oil crud and machineing swarf from the work done on reboring etc (if you had that done)

What is the best way of getting the old plugs out so I don't damage the ally block? And have people decided upon a single best sealer to use? (take it only the water plugs need sealing?) Are the socket head (allen key) big grub screw/bolts in the head and block to do with the oilways? Also the 2 square head bolts in the sides of the block (very tight)?
Best way to get the plugs out is to bash them right into the warterways in the block with a drift, then turn them sideways and pull them out with a pair of pliers. As for best sealer, what ever you have to hand, just needs to be waterproof, probably silicone based but I bet not esential, and be able to stand up to about 100 deg C, so bathroom tile sealent
I used the fancy urathane/cyanoacralate stuff on mine as that was what I had to hand when I was putting the plugs in (I had been using it to stick the floor into the car the previous week).

How about silicone gasket sealer? Oh- it the big plug at the end of the cam just another core plug or different? Are there any diagrams on web showing oil galleries etc in RV8's? Also I was going to get a haynes manual for a range rover or something to help with the build- is there a better more engine dedicated book for that?
