Hi

in the diagram it says that you need to put a resistance coil in the ign feed,is this causing a problem with high voltage?you may have killed the unit already.Reading the note on the drawing.
when you turn a sd1 over you send a full voltage to the coil,is this getting a feed to the unit giving the earth problem.

i looked at the dizzy which is a unilite item ,i tried sucking on the vacuum and it doesnt move back the arm goes up abit, tried to adjust it but it only made it go solid, when its at its lightest it takes about 3 or 4lb of pressure to move it, how easy should it move, the plate turns easy enough, any replies welcome :D rich

Rich
You will be lucky to see much movement from the vac advance unit just by sucking the pipe. If the timing is near enough it should start with the vac line off. But it may idle roughly.

Take a vac reading at idle to see if its right for the dissy specs.

You will soon see what happens when you put the vac line on and off at idle if you have a decent strobe hooked up to check the vac advance.

I had a problem with my new Mallory dissy in so far that it was giving me way to much advance at idle. And for some reason seemed to be still hanging on to vac advance at wider throttle. I pissed a round for hours with this. Then on the advise of someone here I decided to blank off the vac advance and run the dissy through the mech advance checks at the various rpms to check all was good, which it was.

So I blanked off my vac line last Xmas when the new engine was in and working. It doesnt stutter on pickup and it runs fine at idle.

I just did the same thing for Dave Tetlow. His RV8 wouldnt run smooth at about 1200 rpm when cruising at low speed in 2nd or 3rd ish. Very lumpy it was.
At idle it was making about 36 degrees of advance, and it had a slight lumpy tickover.

Took the vac line off and blanked it. Did the advance checks @ 1200 1800 2400 and 3800 rpm and the curve was as per book.

We took it out for a blast and she runs really smooth at low rpm in 3rd gear now with no lumpyness to the engine. She also picks up and runs smooth when he guns it from low rpm to the redline.

I suppose while I'm waiting for my pistons to arrive that I could investigate this further, but mine runs fine as it is with the Mallory magnetic with the vac blanked off.

FWIW ?
