No the diesel vw engine that was in the T25 was basically a golf engine and the bell housing is different, that was the first thing i thought of, KEP in california do uprated starters, but they are $295 about 200quid with delivery.

Ok i did get the engine running,i put some wd40 in each cylinder as i thought that because it had been sittting for 8 years it may free things up and bugger me it started. However, the old problem of the starter not turning the engine is back. It turns the engine over really well with the plugs out. I put an extra earth lead on the engine also, but its gone back to its old ways.
As per earlier post a rover starter is 1.4kw ,the vw one is 0.7kw,so think that this may well be the problem.
Ok on to the question, does anyone know if its possible to get starters either modified to increase its power or can they be split so i could use the fitting plate and shaft of the vw and the motorized part of something more potent?

first port of call would be a starter motor reconditioning shop, they would probably be able to sort something out to fit, or even build it.

other than that, you would have to shell out for the reduction starter
which is the one mentioned earlier.....

For battery cables, i used 2AWG audio power cable, have had no problems....

I believe that a hot earth strap on the battery can only be due to a poor connection on the strap.

If the heat was due to current in the system the other smaller cables would burn out first. The heat is due to arcing over a high resistance joint.

I would recommend checking the connections, cable and mounting point of the earth strap.

I had this problem on my MG and every time she would not turn over I would find the battery terminal hot.

IMHO.
