slipping clutch....

Post by Andy515666 »

Hi guys.

Got my SD1 out on the road doing some road tests after the rebuild. Background in a nutshell
removed 3.5 motor and auto and in went a 3.9, performance road cam, ported heads, 4 barrel carb, headers etc etc and now a manual using an LT77 gearbox.

anyway I was blasting (literally) up and down the hill today (ha ha ha) when suddenly the clutch started slipping. it got pretty bad and i just made it up the hill to the safety of my house.

Now there was no burning smell which I thought one would often get. infact no clutch smell at all.

Once home i looked to find an oil leak from "somewhere in the engine bay" and this was runnig along the sump rim and dripping down the dust cover on the bellhousing.
The dust cover is not tight against the bellhousing due to some modifications and is awaiting replacement.
Anyway i have no idea why this happened.
two theory's
a: too much HP now going through the clutch (the parts used were new rover parts and inspected by two mechanics before installing)
b: oil has dripped onto the clutch thus the loss of trackion and no smell.

Im lost and really dont want to be removing the motor so I thought to fix the oil leak first, then try road testing again to see if my b: theory was correct.
any idea's?

Andy

taking no chances I decided to drop the gearbox out of the SD1 yesterday to inspect if there was oil on the flywheel causing my clutch slip. I spoke with Tony (thanks mate :) ) and found out that the pivot pin needs no washer behoind it . My "helping neighbour" had put a big ass spring washer behind the pivot pin! This xtra 4mm has cause my clutch to not quite grip properly.

So again jacked up the car, remoed exhaust system, disconnected driveshaft, removed slave cylinder, removed bellhousing bolts, removed gearbox mounts (which I need new rubbers for!) then man handled the gearbox back off the block and had a good look inside. Removed the clutch folk, pivot pin and the problem, the washer!
Re-installed pin, re greased and hooked up the clutch fork and put eveything back together.

3 hours from start to finish! Not too bad i dont think, then agan i have had plenty of practice. :?

just some pics of the car and box.
