Top Hat Liners

Post by mgbloke »

OK Guys, where is the best/cheapest place to get top hat liners fitted?
Seems to me to be the only way for bullet proof reliability.
Had my present engine done at ACR they made a really good job but @ £1k+ I need to economise for my new project.

Thanks
Mark

"Best" and "Cheapest" at the same time, that is not usually possible!

V8 Developments will do a bare block for 800 quid.

HT Howard of Slough will also do them, I don't know how much they charge as I only just discovered them the other day (on recomendation).

They're skimming my heads and doing some other stuff for me at the moment.

Some tuners reckon that it is not a good fix, well not if the block is welded at the same time as it will crack next to the weld. This is not my opinion, just what I heard.

someone else mentioned Wildcat will do them for 600 sheets, but you might have a rather long wait . . .

Got mine done for £750 + vat but would not go back again.

Also I'm not 100% on this but some people have said the Tophat liners and bigger, so the block need to be bored more, so can be even more likly to crack.

I can vouch for that ! Dont be alarmed if you find yourself waiting 3-4 months for them done. :(

Do they have the later big bearings ( 4.0, 4.6 ) on the mains and the rods, or do they use the old ( 3.5, 3.9, 4.2 ) ones :?:

I've been building V8 engines for more years than I care to consider  , and I can honestly say that ACR's re-linered block is without exception the best quality remanufactured block I have ever seen.
I won't use anyone else's blocks unless absolutely pushed, and even then it'd only be from V8 Developments.
Trust me, you get what you pay for.... and if it's painted blue or says "Lund" :x anywhere near it, run a bl00dy mile!! :)

I have no connection with ACR other than as a completely satisfied customer. 8-)

ACR? They got a website?

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the 'cosworth' blocks as they only have standard liners in, you'd be better spending the money on an old block with top-hats
