Anyone have a 4.6 that needs new liners.

Post by TVRleigh »

Well the liners on the 4.0 I bought are oval and need replacing,

So I thought if I'm going to replace them I'd be better off doing a 4.6 block. and was wondering if anyone has one, that they may have bought, then relised it's too expensive to fix.

I don't care about the rest, as will put the 4.0 pistons and crank back in. as I have to run a 4.0. but It would be handy to have an upgrade path.

I know this should have gone in the wanted section, but I need to know quite quick, else I'll have to get the 4.0 done.

Thanks
Leigh

I could be totally wrong here but isn't the 4.0 and the 4.6 (and 3.9) all the same bore...94mm. Its the stroke that gets you the capacity. Your 4.0 crank has the same stroke as the 3.5 and 3.9 but does not have the same journal sizes.

Basically if you need new liners then a set of 3.9 jobbies will do.

If all of the above is bo11ox then I apologise!

EDIT...Reading your post again I see that you do not want to re-line your block!!...I really should learn to read properly!

The 4.0 and 4.6 blocks are 100% the same, apart from the quality grade.
there are 3 grades the lower 2 grades are made into 4.0 blocks and to top grade blocks are used in the 4.6 engines.

Leigh,

Preumably you have had the block measured by your engineer, I must admit notwithstanding the inferior quality of the 4.0 blocks I have never heard of liner ovality, even engines that have run well over a hundred thousand miles, usually have minimal bore wear. I believe you had the block pressure tested and it stood up ok, are there also heavy ridges at the top of the liners which may indicate high mileage and a poor service history of oil changes?

Well Thurstone's done the pressure test, and then when they went to do the hone, they phone me up and said the liners are oval. and need changing and what do I want to do.

Leigh,

If thats the situation you could possibly do a 20thou (0.5mm) rebore of the existing liners which should be approx £150.00 + the cost of a set of +20thou pistons which would be less than half the cost of re-linering the block.

Problem I've found is they don't do over size 4.0 pistons.

I'm going to get them to top-hat the current block. at least them I'll know I have a 100% sorted solid block.

Leigh,

More expensive but in the long run far better, and with the added peace of mind that you have got a reliable bottom end.

well I've I added up all the prices.
The tophat option was not much more money.

I could have got standard liners put back in, but then I would have allways be worried about slippage.

options was
new 4.0 block 700 (this could still fail or have slippage) but would not need new bearings)
Second hand 4.0 block £400 (would need testing and honing etc)
4.6 block and new pistons and skimming about £600 (not sure if I could get the CR I want plus I've been told 4.6 pistons are heavier)
All the above is plus vat and shipping

top hatting was £750 so at most £150 more.

I think this £150 is worth it for peace of mind.

should end up about 1k once I add rings and bearing and crank balance.
Plus the £450 I paid for the block head and injection
plus £200 for the ancilleries
plus about £50 for gaskets.

so leave's me about 300 for a cam lifters and timming chain.
Then I've got a very sorted engine for 2k.

you would pay more than that for a fully preped long engine, that was not top hatted.
