Oil Capacity

Post by ian.stewart »

How much for the RV8 do you really need??
After having Surge problems and leaks on my steel sump, I was going to make a cast ally sump, but that was starting to get expensive, so I have started to fab a a rear winged and baffled sump, just mocked it all up and not including filter and cooler the sump will hold 7.3 litres!!!! Im thinking this is a bit on the greedy side   but Im not too fussed as long as the thing works,
All I need to do now is blag a spot welder to fix all the baffles in place, than onto a TIG session to finish the rest.
Ian :D

Got a similar thing with mine, have added a wing on the sump but with a remote filter and cooler I reckon it will take about 7 litres.
Obviously if you have all these voids to fill then it will need a lot more oil. I dont see it as being a problem, just stiffen the front springs a bit :D

Got any progress piccies, Ian?

I was thinking of having a go at this myself. Do you need to spot & TIG weld - would it be OK to Mig instead? (that's all I've got and I'm still at the novice stage with that  )

Pic may soon be up, depends if I can get my phone to talk with the computer.

Why TIG over MIG. TIG is generally a better way to weld if you can ensure cleanliness of the parent metals, less scaling. less spatter, and a far neater weld, and scaling and spatter normally mean you will leave some sort of residue in the sump that will be a Sh-t to get out, its the very same reason the baffles will be spot welded in position, less chance of leaving debris in the sump, just as a safty thing I will leave a couple of magnets in the sump to gather any ferrous deposits that are floating around, even the trap door hinges are home made in one piece with a 3mm silver steel rod as part part of the door so they dont need welding,

Ian, You are right about the Dry Sump, if I could afford it it would be on, If money gets a bit better this year it may be a fitment next winter, especially as I want to try a few Sprints in the car,
