Anybody have any recommended suppliers for the FE Ford motor

Post by Paul B »

I've bought a great hunk of Ford big block for my latest projects power unit, and was wondering if anybody had any contacts or recommended people who have info, parts, tuning spares etc for this behometh?

I actually have the 360, which is a shorter stroke version of the well known FE390, but just a crankchaft/rods swap needed to get the extra cubes 30 cu in back.

Fits quite nicely, despite its size. 8-)

Ta. I've added them to my list of forums to browse. The more I look around them the more info I find.

It's still a greasy dirty mess at the mo, so no 'nice' piccies to look at. I was on Summitracing.com last night, making up a shopping list. Ooer, I could easily spend some serious dosh there and soon have a very healthy 390, or bigger. They sell Eagle 390 cranks for £220, very likely cheaper than regrinding the old 360 crank I have now, if it needed doing, plus I get the extra 30 cubes and compression.

And I've found a couple of places that make blower manifolds......

Nice one Paul,
an engine where they didn't have to compromise on where the exhaust ports went!
I've got a book on the FE series upstairs somewhere I'll have to find it now
best of luck

And in the 390 Mustang? Or is that a different beastie (Bullitt 390 - what a sound that made. Done to death maybe but still gives me the shivers).

John, Surprisingly, Real Steel do have a fair bit on their website for the motor. Well, the 390 version, but that is just a crank and rods difference, everything else is just the same.

Mike, I bought the rebuild book, by Steve Christ, or whatever his name is, supposed to be the best one available.

Ally Kat, same motor I believe, the 390 has higher compressio ratio and has beeen put in quite a few pokey musclecars, with various hi-po manifold and carb systems.

Hi Paul
the book I had was fairley basic, history , parts interchange, a bit about the oil system, (and I think some mods for performance work) and some tuning stuff (head castings info) may be the one you have. I'll hunt it out Saturday.
the Wikipedia entry has a bit of info, but it's wikipedia so treat with caution  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_FE_engine

Yesterday I came very close to ordering a whole bunch of stuff from Summit to freshen it up, but changed my mind as there will be loads of welding and grinding and stuff going on, with the motor going in and out a half dozen times no doubt, so I decided to leave all that until the car is more nearer being finished.
