But just what tooling is required and how much does it cost compared with how many you are likely to do? Maybe that's why it costs a bit more than you think it should.

Top-hat liners cost £800. Same again for the rebuild.

You saying you got all the machine work, parts inc. decent cam and all the bits for a rebuild for circa £800?! Does that include heads, inlet manifold, front cover etc? A complete ARP kit is £300 alone . . .

If you have, fair play.
I bought a knackered old 3.9 (fitted with later 10-bolt type, injection heads) for £100. Everything there except injection system.
Stripped it myself. Had block pressure tested - proved to be a good 'un. Bought 4.6 crank, rods & pistons for £100 - all proved to be good (pistons/rings were like brand-new). Had crank journals turned down to fit the block. Rebuilt heads myself, lapping-in new standard valves. Matched ports of inlet manifold to cylinder heads myself with dremel and a LOT of care. Fitted complete set of new bearings. ARP Mains/Big-ends - £130 (ebay). Built up complete engine (with inlet manifold but no injection) for 100 quid more than it would cost me to top-hat a knackered block. Now to spend the money i saved megasquirting it...

Hats off to you mate I wish I had the time to do that. Job well done on the second hand parts there, esp. the engine! Kinda jealous now hehe!

thanks fella. because ive not been in a rush to build the engine, ive just been patient and trawled flea-bay over the course of the last 12 months. the best part was the fact that when i bought the old 3.9, the guy that sold it to me didnt realize it had been fitted with nice late style 4.6 heads - BONUS!!
