zf autobox query
Hi lads, my first post on here. I`ve just mated up a zf 4hp22 autobox out of a Jag xj6 to a Rover v8 using a rangerover bellhousing, all fits together ok but the gearbox seems to be rotated about ten degrees clockwise in relation to the engine, is this right? If so is it ok to use like this or do I need to change to a Rangerover gearbox sump and pick up to level things up?

You'll find that the shift pattern & maximum engine speed won't be quite right for the Rover engine, but it'll be close enough!
Ideally you want the governor from a V8 so at least the max engine speed won't be set too high. My Volvo governor gives the WOT upshift at around 6K which is a tad high.
Chris.

This is a lucky thread for me tonight.
Sorry to highjack it, but a mate of mine has just fitted a ZF box to his MGB. Now he has a problem trying to find a shifter that will work it.
He was hoping to find a TCI or Lokar unit to do the job.
Here is his note to me from just a few mins ago,
"Yes, its the Range Rover ZF gearbox, but I have taken the transfer box off and put a rear end from a BMW 5 series and then had to fabricate the drive shaft with a BMW one end and Ford t'other end to meet the Granada diff. So what shifter can I get to do the job?"
I know its probably not important about the BMW bit, but he want to know if he can find a B&M type shifter to work the ZF box.
What shifters do you guys recommend??
Thanks
Perry

I modified my original shifter .... mgb auto .... by making up a new legend to read the shifter positions, could have been easier if i had used a 4 speeder from something else, but this bolted straight back in, and no dedents on the shifter, the box is notchy enough to feel the positions .... from this page onwards .... http://community.webshots.com/album/555 ... t?start=72
So thats where it went !
I`m using a jag xj6 shifter in my fd victor, I haven`t fitted the engine/ box yet but I don`t forsee any problem, I`ll tackle the governor issue when its up and running, whats the best gearbox sump to use? a range rover one doesn`t look suitable, sherpa maybe, or leave it as it is as suggested earlier,
Cheers, Andy
