Shuts down on its own...

Post by mikeinatruck »

Had my first problem with the Landy today, engine seemed to be running fine, left it ticking over walked away for a couple of mins came back and it had stopped, it would not restart, no spark. Got her towed home and then tried it again, low and behold it fired up? ticked over for about a 2 mins and then stopped, like the ignition was off and would not fire again, left it for a few mins and it fired up again?

Its an electronic coil on a RR Lucas amplifier, SU carbs. all the wiring is okay I know that for sure.
I cant say I have ever seen a coil act like that before has anyone else?

I was getting a bit warm

Sort of similar to what happened to me. I pulled the king lead from the bottom of the coil and some oil came out. The coil was breaking down as it got warmer. A new coil sorted it.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing, I did find some info on a jad website that the ignition amp can also cause the same problem (Lucas constant energy unit)

I am a bit dubious about the dizzy coil amp reliabilty now and was thinking of choping it all for a Mallory setup but never having used them before I have no idea how good they are.

Fleabay has a kit for 235 quid is that good?

Sorry, no idea. My only experience is with an EFI set up.
