RV8 Starter Motors.

Post by Coops »

Hi Guys,
my mates v8 pick up spins over real ferkin quick,
i think he has a higher torque starter motor, am i right? its a 3.9 rv8 in a hilux.
My problem is the solenoid on his starter is on the side,
my old sd1 starter setup the solenoid is on the bottom,
if i use the smaller 3.9 starter the solenoid fouls the rack, is there another high torque starter that has the solenoid on the bottom, or can one be modified to suit???
my starter is ok and turns over quick, but after hearing ians tina turn over and my mates v8 hilux my sounds wanked

There aren't any original equip ones that are the high torque with the solenoid at the bottom. They were all on the 4x4's am afraid. Pretty sure I have seen some after market ones on evilbay but they were around £250 notes and a completely different shape. Even the TVR's and morgans use the solenoid on the side.

Tony, Hack the lugs off and rotate the body until you get the desired location and reweld the lugs on. you may need to trim the nose support back a bit so you can get the rotation, or you can completly go without the lugs altogether, using studding in the bolt holes make up a brace to go round the back of the starter so using ths studding you cam make a sort oh strongback, or even make some small locating/clamping dogs to clamp on the anular ring around the nose of the starter. Somthing I did was mount the rack on a small wedge so the rack rotates upwards and moves the shaft upwards and away fron the starter.

Sounds a bit gymicy (sp) to me...
What does it matter how fast the thing spins over so long as it starts?

Cut turn and rotate. tiny has one on the saph. Paul Nash in high wycombe used to do them for us. there is one that is rotated but it hits most headers instead. It's worth trying to set up the welder up as you can't go to wrong with welding a starter.
The high torque offers a geared drive so if it gets hot as most do it will still spin the engine over using the same voltage, less loss on start up means more volts to the sparky things. :D
Yes it's a Porsche and yes, it should sound like that!

Don't quote me on this but I think what your looking for is 1.4kw. I haven't actually seen a 4x4 one that isn't high torque but some of the older ones might be I guess. There is a post on the old forum with all the part numbers and ratings about roughly 2 years ago. Me and Russell ram were part of it as well as others. What I can remember is the 4.0 4.6 ones are guaranteed to be ok.

JC its more than just the torque they are about half the weight and a good bit smaller in comparison to the SD1 ones.

What Marki said - 4.0 is slightly less powerful than the 4.6 version but both are more powerful, smaller and lighter than the old SD1 units. All have solenoid to side (in 4x4 position) though as far as i know.

Think later 4.0/4.6s commonised one the 4.6 one.

You could try one of these if you've some spare cash

I had a wierd one on mine.

It was an old starter that had been recon'd. It was the same shape and solenoid position as an sd1 starter but 2/3's the size of a sd1 starter. If anything it was the same size as the smaller 3.9 starter but they have the solenoid on the side so don't fit.

I bought it for £50 from egay and it had done very little work in my possession due to my constantly changing ideas but I gave it away to a rather stressed car builder trying to put a v8 in an escort!

It soan the engine over very fast and you could probably of driven the car on it as it was that strong!
V8'less but a fountain of dorky knowledge ref v8's!

been doing some more research,
Sovereign (http://www.sovereignltd.co.uk/index.html) list a starter for the 300 sherpa 3.5 v8 (85 on), 1.4 kw same size as the sd1 starter,
also a smaller version of the above BUT not good for cranking over too long as they pack up.
price near on £100
BUT i have the part number now SS191
