Is nitriding a crank worth it for a high reving engine. Where can one get it done? I can't afford a billet crank. Might stretch to some fancy con rods and forged pistons.
Where can you get con rods shot peened?

nitriding helps stop the crank wearing not breaking. You should only get it done to either a new crank or one that has been properly crack tested and freshly machined. Its useful in high revving racing applications where wear of the bearing would be higher than normal. Most machine shops wont touch a crank after it has been done so if it wears your looking for another crank usually. Most of the tuning shops will be able to get it done for you and a lot of the good machine shops too, same goes for shot peening although polishing is a better alternative. If your going that far with the rods I would advise you get it all properly balanced as well.
That makes sense about wear.
I thought Nitriding was also used to help stop surface cracks developing which could cause fracture.
What is tuftriding then is that just similar to nitriding? Nitriding is a chemical process, so is nitriding something similar?
So the order in which one would get these things done is to have a crack test, then machined (possibly oil ways cross drilled) , and then balanced(along with rods and pistons etc..) and then nitrided?
I was certainly going to have everything balanced properly, yes.
P.S Thanks for your help with the computer Marki.
