worn Rover gearbox

Hi, I have a Stag Mk1 with a Rover P6 3.5 litre and a 5 speed box fitted, which is very notchy, especailly when it's cold and always on second gear. The car also makes a whining noise, particularly when pulling away in first - diff or box I wonder? Anyway, I want to either repair or replace the box, but I don't want to repalce if the 'new' one is just the same as the old, any adice very gratefully received! Thanks. One more thing, would a triumph box fit and would it be a better bet? I want a manual by the way. Russ

i have exactly the same problem mate crunches into second gear when cold and whines its tits off in every gear, was told there is a filter in the box somewhere that gets blocked

Try changing the oil to a fully synthetic 75W80 gear oil such as Redline MTL (expensive) or Castrol SMX-S (available from Halfords).

The LT77 is not a great box..though it got a bit better as the versions improved (there are 4). It is VERY sensitive to type of fluid used with it, and if you stray in the wrong direction, the fluid will damage the box in very little time.

Though it was made for R380 (the LT77 successor and a much better box) you can try Castrol SMX-S. If you are in NA, it is not available there and you can try Amsoil Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) SAE 5W-30 instead.

Hi, thanks for the oil tip, will give it a try. I've also got the option to buy a Stag manual box with overdrive, do you know if/how to fit one to a Rover engine and is a it a better box? Thanks, Russ
