More Questions on Camshafts (sorry !)

Post by Nige B »

Hi All,

I have (finally) sorted out much of what I needed to do work / house / 4x4 wise and now the "Want to do" for this question has sort of made it near the top !

I have a John Eales 5.2V8 Triple plenum V8

This was built some years ago for a 4x4 comp safari racer, quick spec is :

5.2 V8
Billet Crank
Arrow Aluminium Rods
Forged Pistons
Massive ported heads
JED Custom inlet and trumpet & Custom triple plenum intakes
Dakar Exhausts
H218 Camshaft (John advose me last week) with solid followers
and custom exhaust made to JED specs and advise
Front end is from a 4 Lire serpentine
Ali sport custom Rad full width Alisport custom Oil Cooler EWP150 and 4 x Spals

Now, .....whilst it was in a rear engined racer...... its now in a 2.5 Ton Full Bodied road legal Land Rover Challenge truck 90, and obviously engine is in the front

John re linered it (was bought a a wreck) - and its been rebuilt and Runs MS2 and is all mapped.

Problem is / I am wondering as to if this H218 is really suited to its new home?

Whilst I know the old "No susbitute for cubes" bit, I am wondering if a H218 is more suited to "Racey" use vs Road and off road low end mid ranage use & low end grunt.

John also advised that revving these too hard is not the best of ideas, and so the seed is in my mind as to which cam if not this one ??.

Camshafts / timing / duration etc etc is something I have never really understood, and Yes I will possibly ask Jon his thoughts as well , but meantime I thought I would ask amongst those who do know about cams their collective throughts ?

What I would like is to have lots of Low and Mid range torque.... and yes ok at the expense maybe of the Higher RPMs ...

Question is should I stick with the H218 (maybe peeps could advise how close this cam is to what I am looking for ?) and / or what other cams would suit ?

Thansk

Nige

The H218 is a fast road cam, so probably a bit weak at the bottom end.
I ran a 'Torquemax' cam for a bit, from the now defunct RPi. I think they just got it from Piper Cams though! That was very good I thought. But eventually it ran out of puff at 5000+RPM.

But your engine is so different (mine was 4.6 with standard parts) I'm not sure a comparison is valid!

Hello Nige,

The big question is, what do you want to do with the car?
Do you want it to have everyday handling, or do you want to blast the car around the track at the rev limit?

Personally, I love it when engines have plenty of power from the bottom of the rev range. I'd install a Kent H180 or a Viper Stump Puller in the engine.

Best regards

H218 IS HYDRAULIC CAM. Are you sure you are running solid lifters?

I have got 4.6l stage 4 with crower 50232 cam. Quite similar like H218. I have got 37x14.5x15 tyres on my Landy hyprid. MS3X engine magnament. And plenty of low end torque. Single 72mm throttle body, 45mm trumpets. LT95 transmission, stock 3.45 diff.
Next time i will go at least 50233 crower if need to replace cam.

You have got 5.2l bottom end. No need to worry about cam.
My SD1 5.2 Run Kent M256 on the street, Wild cat heads. 7Kg flywheel. To mutch low end torque. Tyres are spinning to mutch. I'm eaven planning to but my SD1 engine on my Landy..
