Cut-out or donor

Post by Alley Kat »

Regarding a Lexus V8, and the intention to MS it. Possibly Emerald, but swaying towards MS -

Is getting a cut-out OK or a whole donor car better - to get sensors and part of the loom? Lex forum says Toy sensors can be argumentative with other ECUs. But will having the loom help / be essential -
Bearing in mind I'm new to efi and not after learning the ins & outs in greatest detail, not interested in self-build; mainly want to get it running.

Only the engine is at issue: nothing else would be needed off a donor except possibly brakes. Cost-wise there's not a whole lot in it. Mainly want to think about the pros & cons purely regarding the engine

Bill,

sorry don't know the answer but rest assured that if you screw it up you'll be able to sell the remains to Gav because he'll be bored with his LS1 by then.

You also have a PM.

Cheers,

Ian

LOL!

I'll ask on the Lex forum. Most of those guys are totally clued up tho so nothing would present a prob either way to them.

Lexus V8, it's the new LS1 y'know

I think the answer is space ! have u got enough to keep all the bits you might need? the bits you could sell on ebay and somewhere to keep the shell whilst you strip it? i know i've had cars on the patio, garden and driveway all at the sametie and 3 cars parked on the road !!
So thats where it went !

It'd probably get stripped at Waynes, then I'd have to get the shell back up here somehow. Storing would be OK once the bike and tot rod are done, could be 'dangerous' otherwise ... she'll get the hump for sure :)
Thats a lot of cars.... I've had 7 bikes plus one in boxes, one of which was part rebuilt in the lounge, but they're a lot smaller!

I would think it all depends on what you are going to put the engine in.

Build a kit and you will need the Donor for the V5 to get the engine date for registration and emissions

Put it in a Capri or similar of 1970 vintage and emissions is a smoke test so no major hassle (So long as you have the Capri V5)

Re the brakes on the donor - will they be ABS and is fo are you going to try and fit ABS to the other car? If not might not be sensible

what elso would you need from the donor? Rear Axle?

It's going in my Amazon, so I don't need it's V5. Also only need the engine. No need for box or axle (IRS with horrible linkages), wouldn't want ABS either but I think the donor model is ABS equipped. Good point. Cost-wise there's not a lot in it, and could recoup the odds by flogging parts off a donor.
