Re: Difference
Which SD1 V8? The EFI SD1s have a few differences to the carb ones. If both carb, the most likely is the compression ratio.

Re: Difference
Bolt patterns are the same . Early blocks had old rope type oil crankshaft seals and the blocks are not as stout as the later blocks . There is a but more metal around the main bearing webs and the ribs in the lifter area are wider and there are bigger ribs at the front and rear of the block between the crank and the cam shafts. The "stiff" blocks ( as the were known ) are probly a better bet for a tuned engine but a hell of a lot of very good engines were built using early blocks . I had an early block machined to take modern oil seals......before I learnt about the later blocks
I wish I was young again , Id be heaps smarter than the first time
Re: Difference
Think if an SD1 engine, it will have the later seal?
I'd say the main difference is the water pump position. It is set lower on the SD1. And the sump and oil pump pickup. If you have both engines, these bit can be swapped.

Re: Difference
Also, old engines had different oil pump, timing gear cover, distributor package.

Re: Difference
The GM/Buick 3.9 cast iron V6 engine's front cover is a bolt on with the uprated oil pump.
Cheers,

Re: Difference
That's not right. All the engines will fit all the gearboxes provided you have the flywheel & clutch to match the gearboxes.
The automatic engines may not have the right spigot bush in the end of the crankshaft, but that's easy to check and remedy.
There is only one bolt pattern.

Re: Difference
Chris, I know it's been a few years since I last used an LT77 but the bellhousing on a 4wd LT77 is considerably longer than that on a 2wd. I stand to be corrected.ChrisJC wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 9:44 pmThat's not right. All the engines will fit all the gearboxes provided you have the flywheel & clutch to match the gearboxes.

Re: Difference
Indeed that is also true.
But as far as the engine is concerned, it can accept either a car 'box or a 4x4 'box.
Yes the bellhousings and input shafts are longer on the 4x4 version. And the 4x4 clutch is bigger than the car clutch.
So if you treat the flywheel and clutch as part of the gearbox, then any gearbox will fit any engine (with the caveat about the spigot bearing).
HTH,
Chris.

Re: Difference
Sorry Chris, I was working on the basis that if you wanted to fit a 4wd LT77 to an SD1 you're going to have issues, and likewise if you fitted a 2wd to a Range Rover. But other than that you are correct that all boxes fit all V8 variants.
Re: Difference
I looked at fitting A ZF 4HP auto to my SD1. Sadly, due to being made to fit the 4WD installation, the bell housing is deeper than needed and fouls the bulkhead. As does the 2WD Sherpa version. Presumably plenty room in a Sherpa, so just used the existing parts.
