Need information on 3.9 Rover V8 and performance parts

Post by Psytex »

Well I've been trying to find information on what sort of performance parts I need and where to get them, but I honestly can't seem to find much information that is telling me anything I need to know.

I don't have an engine at this moment, but I'll soon be looking for an old Opel to put a Rover 3.9L V8 with TBI in it, I want a small and light V8 so the Rover V8 seemed to be my best and cheapest option, but I've spent some time trying to figure out where I can get bigger throttle bodies, performance intake (what little information I gathered seemed to tell me that a bigger throttle body wont do much without increasing the airflow into the engine, so original rover parts will be restrictive), megasquirt, performance camshaft kits and so on, but so far I haven't found anything that could point me in the right direction.

I have to be honest, I know very little about engine tuning, I know some basic things but very little about what parts to get, but that's why I'm here, I want to learn and I honestly don't know where to start, all I know is that I want a small light V8 with TBI into a small-mid size classic Opel.

Here's basically what I want/need to know:
-Where to get performance parts for 3.9 rover v8 online
(Ignore this one if it's not allowed to post any links to sites that sell parts.)
-What brands I should be looking out for
(throttle body, intake and such.)
-Things I should know about tuning a Rover V8 with TBI
(What I need to know so that I don't waste money or buy parts that won't work well with the v8.)
-Any information that could be helpful for someone who is very green when it comes to this sort of thing
(I'm willing to learn and I also have someone who can help me on the way so that I can do this sort of stuff on my own one day. As far as I know he has no personal experience with these engines.)
-For the most part I need information about camshaft kits, throttle body, megasquirt, intake and other things that I should look into.
(for example stiffer valve springs if that is necessary or could improve the performance a bit.)

I suggest you try to get hold of the David Hardcastle books and the Des Hammill one. Reading up will give you a ton of information about what to google for.

Throttle bodies may look very pretty on an RV8, but unless going to a very high state of tune won't give you any benefit over a standard plenum with injection. And will make tuning a MegaSquirt more tricky.

If not familiar with tuning and tuning of the Rover I would aim for not catching too much problems by climbing mountain territory.

The stock EFI 4.6 Rover can do a lot that the 4 litre will only do
after a lot of tricks.
The stock fuel injection just from the metal parts is not bad and
can be upgraded with a MegaSquirt later if necessary.

If the 3.9 must be the aim why not going on a Edelbrock 500 carb
and a mild sporty cam around 260-270 degrees?
Cheers
