V8 Rover P5B rear main seal (Rope!)

Post by Mickp »

Does anyone know of a supplier that sells a conversion to a rubber seal to replace the rope seal in the rear main.
Im having big problems fitting said rope seal as the item supplied is to large to compress and locks the crankshaft up and you cant get the main bearing cap to seat completely.
The one that came out was almost felt like but the new one is much harder.
Confused.....

New rope seal fitted but completely squashed but not enough to allow the main cap to seat.

This shows the old seal next to the new now deformed fitted one

Well it seems l am doing it about right but need to flatten out the rope seal more.I've come across a video on youtube which shows an American v8 with the same seal and they bash the hell out of it with a piece of tubing and a hammer.
So onward and upward then

I had the same issue many many years ago and it turned out that although a rope type seal had been fitted in the past it actually should have had a 2 piece rubber seal might be worth checking that as well.

Have you got a link to the video? I seem to recall reading somewhere that the standard block requires machining to accommodate a lip seal at the back.

Link to video.

Finally got it done, much time spent working the seal to get the clearance/fit right.
This engine had rope seals as standard and as you rightly say would need the block machined to except the later rubber seal.
The video is really informative and gave me the information needed to complete the job correctly.

Thanks Mick

Glad you got it sorted. That video is really useful. I was surprised by how much work is required to get the seal to fit correctly. That's probably one of the reasons why people don't like them.

I particularly like the speedy ratchet driver the guy used. Anyone know if they're available in the UK? I've seen a US make (SK) but not seen a distributor in the UK.
