Removing ARP head studs

Post by Number 7 »

I had these fitted about 15 years on a 4.3 in a TVR, and am in the process of changing the O/S head gasket. Unfortunately, the bulkhead bodywork prevents the head sliding up the studs by more than an inch or two, so I thought that I could remove the studs whilst the head is in place. Managed to get 2 of middle long ones out (under the rocker cover), but no go with a couple of others. So I'm having the engine and box removed, and the head taken off that way (by a specialist garage). I want to replace the studs on that head with conventional (non-stretch) head bolts, to avoid a repeat whenever I next need to remove that head. Given that the studs would have been installed correctly (finger tight) should they come out easily once the head is off? I'm not planning to re-use them so if they don't come out easily, what's the best approach (without throwing swarf all over the block)? Just interested, as the garage will be doing this, but not sure they will have encountered this problem before.

Thanks

You'd normally just use a stud remover - a tool which grips a smooth surface like a stud. Fits a socket set. And hope they haven't corroded in place and snap off.

I'm I great believer in using a decent sealer on any thread that goes into ally. To prevent it corroding.

I've always locked two nuts together on the exposed thread and just unscrewed the stud. Guess it depends if it's loctited in.

You are right, they should just be nipped up using the allen key hole at the top of each stud. If they are tight then some muppet has not fitted them correctly. The two nuts locked together method should get them out without damaging them, that or a stud extractor tool.

Personally I'd stick with ARP studs and just fit them as per the instructions, the Rover bolts look like spindley self tappers compared to the ARP stuff.
