Thanks Dave.
Am going to investigate more tonight so will do a fluid test and see if it vanishes.

Okay after another evening in the workshop I have found the fault.
It was not leaking through the head joint so I took the head off and sure enough number 7 piston is melted.
It took some looking to spot it from the crown but now its out it has burn both sets of compressing rings and taken out the oil control ring as well.
Likely the bore is unmarked.. not sure how that survived but at least the fault is identified and I can start to fix it.
I have identified my pistons as 3.5 Litre Vitesse Compression 9.75:1
made by AE part number 18069 G1
ID6
S08
+0.020
Has any one got one as I really dont want to buy a set of 8 only to replace the one damaged piston.
Thanks

That is correct, that is why I wrote piston/bore related what alsoDaveEFI wrote:I've never seen a compression that low due to piston/bores even on a very worn engine.
includes broken rings that might scratch into the bore or the piston
or a damaged piston where some relevant parts fell off.
Cheers
