You could say the same about an 02 sensor. Or CTS. The CTS on the flapper and hotwire RV8 is 18mm.
Not really. The standard around the world for O2 sensors is M18. There are a few variations, but the bulk are M18. The sensor is large, hence a large thread.

An M18 coolant or air temp would be a very very rare thing.

You could probably buy one of these alloy adaptors to something else...cut the dead end off and re-tap as required

As I said, the CTS on my SDI EFI is M18. That's why I fitted an M18 ATS to my home made trunking. :D
