Re: Ignition advance with ECU controlled ignition - Should it be this high?

Just thought I'd add a bit to this. I recently checked my camshaft as per https://www.v8forum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=123014#p123014 Although all seems good it seems that the slightly wild characteristics of this cam could be the cause of the high timing requirement. Just trying to decide on pla...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

OK, thought I'd close the loop on this. I checked all the lobes on my cam. Positives are: All lobes gave the same profile within measurement uncertainty which would say my cam is good even if it's not the most suited to me. The peak positions were in the correct location, don't have the figures in f...

Re: Rover 3.9 14CUX Hotwire - Fires Up but Won’t Run

Do you know what tune you are running? RG will give you a tune number & ident, of course that's no guarantee that the chip may not have been altered since. Fuel pressure would definitely be my next check so it's good you've got that on the go. Is it a standard regulator mounted on the fuel rail ...

Re: Problems with new Rover 4.6 Engine

Thanks again to GDCobra and please put me right if I didnt understand the long term trimming issue correctly. That's as I understand that although I've never debugged the code for closed loop as I only run open loop so didn't need to know that but that is what those in the know indicate. 90C seems ...

Re: Rover 3.9 14CUX Hotwire - Fires Up but Won’t Run

One more idea after hours of reading online… I found a really useful page here: http://www.g33.co.uk/pages/technical-fuel-injection.html Yeah, that is a useful site. I've used it a lot over the years. Basically any air which gets into the plenum that does not go through the MAF will not get fuel su...

Re: Rover 3.9 14CUX Hotwire - Fires Up but Won’t Run

Is your fuel pump continuing to get power when the engine starts running and is the fuel pressure maintaining? I don't quite understand how it is working with the fuel pump on a separate circuit, normally the fuel pump is controlled (via a relay) from the ECU so that fuel won't flow if engine is sto...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

I remember reading some time back that one one advantage of the injection system used on ME/BF109 engines (Over and above being able to pull negative G) was that, due to being direct injection they could use valve overlap to flow air through the engine to aid cooling without flowing fuel into the ex...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

Thanks Steve, I'll give that vid' a proper watch when I get home later. Rhoads lifters are designed to bleed down. And this would be more so at lower rpm, when there is force over a longer time to eject oil and effectively reduce lift/duration seen at the valve. I remember reading about these many y...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

As is often the case, more isn't always better. Sacrificing a few horsepower for better drivability is often a wise decision. Yep, totally agree, a few years ago I may have been interested in the top line numbers but these days I'd rather have smoothness and drivability plus the ability to drive at...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

Thank you very much Frank. Your charts make the characteristics of each cam very clear, including the slightly greater lobe separation on the Hurricane. I'm really going to have to think about this, balancing the benefit of a milder cam against the work and cost involved. The engine is in a Cobra wh...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

The 3.9 reacts differently. Displacement tames camshafts. Cheers Frank. By that I'm taking it to mean what may be wild on a smaller engine will be less so for larger capacity? Just looking at the notes on the Stump Puller it looks like this has an narrower RPM range than the Typhoon at 1500-5800 vs...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

Hello, I'm guessing it's a DW270 Viper Typhoon. Regards, Frank Hi Frank Thanks for the feedback. I agree, those charts look virtually identical to mine, the peak measurement at the lifter is 7.56/7.54 on mine and the angle values for lift at 0.5 lift is also very close. By coincidence this is the c...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

It is common for durations etc to be quoted on a 50 thou basis, or 1mm ( not the same oddly ), so that can vary by cam manufacturer. Generally they don't go by from actual lift from zero to actual close....but sometimes that can be given too. I presume some of that is because all cams will have a s...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

IMG_3702.JPEG IMG_3700.JPEG So now I simply rotate the engine and read off the lift values Please bear in mind I've never performed any cam checks before so this may not be and 'established' method but I believe it is sound. I've initially started taking lift reading as soon as a movement appears o...

Re: Camshaft: Trying to identify and check

IMG_3716.JPEG This verified that TDC is correct on the pointer. I've than created a setup to hold a DTI against a pushrod which is bearing against the lifter. IMG_3703.JPEG IMG_3713.JPEG I've setup an endoscope to make it easy to see the engine position and the lifter position at the same time.
