Meet "RONIN", My 2002 Audi S8 Quattro.

Hi Comrades!

Sorry I didn't introduce myself in the appropriate section, before I began to post. Still finding my way round the various boards.

I currently run a 2002 Audi S8 Quattro. Right now, pretty much standard. Over the next few months, I'll be converting her to 6-speed manual (she's currently 5-speed Tiptronic). Oh, and she's 4,2 V8 40-valve.

Manuals don't exist in RHD cars, they were available on the Continent with manual option though. Even the United States and Canada, were Tiptronic only, despite obviously being LHD.

I have been gathering all that's needed, I have the main items:

1) Audi 01E 6-speed manual tranny.
2) Audi 01E 6-speed shift mechanism.
3) Audi 077 40V flywheel.
4) Audi 01E clutch slave cylinder.
5) Audi S8 front driveshafts x 2.

I won't take up space here with a build, that will commence once I've got all the missing components. In the meantime, a few pictures:

There are supercharger kits available for the Audi 40V engines, and some owners in the United States have gone the Biturbo route. I would go for a supercharger personally - packaging is a lot neater, and supercharger work really well with big capacity V8 engines.

And I know, the wheels are on the small side for such a large car. Current wheels are the stock S8 8,5" x 18" Avus alloys, the options were 8,5" or 9,0" x 20" 9-spoke burnished alloys, shod in 255 or 265/35x20 rubber.

On the look out for those, will most likely pick them up from Germany, a lot cheaper out there.

I always think it's a shame with modern V8's that there's probably a fantastic engine hiding underneath the plastic covers!

You're probably right, most newer V8 offerings have cosmetic covers.

Pictures will most probably be pretty sterile too, so no oily bits, hehehe.

But is the tiptronic bad or something ? I'd have thought auto would be great in a big cruiser like that ?

Tips are okay, it's just that I'll always prefer a manual. Better on fuel, easier on front pads and discs, lighter, a lot more durable and of course, over a second quicker 0 - 60 mph.

Audi tends to be very conservative with their 0 - 60 mph times, and most drivers better Audi supplied data. Data for the Audi S8 Quattro (D2) is:

5-speed Tiptronic 0 - 62 mph: 6,6 secs.
6-speed manual 0 - 62 mph: 5,4 secs.

Both are electronically limited to 155.3 mph, that will be mapped out soon.

Both respectable figures for such a big car. To put things in perspective, the S8 Quattro Tiptronic weighs 1,858 kgs!
