1985 flapper EFi, multiplug connector

Post by Fed_up_Stag-owner »

Multiplug connector to box on UK passenger side inner wing (engine bay) is causing problems. All connections cleaned with contact spray and cotton buds, but the connector works loose over bumpy roads, leading to running on less than 8 cylinders. Temporary fix with cable ties, might even be the permanent fix!

Looks as if the female connectors need to be crimped up a bit, has anyone done this?

Often I have closed up the inserts to get a better connection.

Chris.

Is the loom routed to the AFM correctly? Can you support it before the AFM in some way? On the SD1 installation the resistor pack helped to do this.
I've not heard of this one before so could something be causing it like excess engine movement?

Bending terminals to get a better connection is rarely successful. Best to replace them. ISTR they are the same as the junior timer ones on the injectors and available from Vehicle Wiring Products, etc.

Thanks Dave, I probably should change my username! Car is TVR with RV8 (bought as a doner car for Stag in 2008), the harness does look a little tight in the area of the box (power resistors for injectors?) and the bills show it has had a rewire, the connection does seem "loose" though. A male/female extension cable would be useful.

If when connected things are good, I'd support the loom somewhere fairly close to the plug - Vehicle Wiring Products do a range of clips that take cable ties to fit bodywork, etc.

If it's a new loom made up for the car and too short, I'd obtain a plug with tails and splice that on to lengthen it. There should be a few around since you don't usually use an AFM when converting to a MegaSquirt. I might even have one. ;-)
